Dr. Zhongjie Sun, PhD, MD, FAHA, Professor and Chair
Dr. Zhongjie Sun, PhD, MD, FAHA, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Sun holds the Thomas A. Gerwin Chair of Excellence in Physiology, and serves as Co-Director of the UT Methodist Cardiovascular Institute. Dr. Sun teaches and mentors graduate students and trains postdoctoral fellows in a broad area of cardiovascular, renal and endocrine sciences, preparing them to be leaders in physiology research in the 21st century and teachers of system and molecular physiology.
Dr. Sun received his MD from Jining Medical College, P. R. China, in 1983. He subsequently received an MS from Tongji Medical University, P. R. China in 1990, and his PhD from Shanghai Medical University, P. R. China, in 1999. Dr. Sun also performed postdoctoral work at the University of Florida. After a long and successful time at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in Norman, Oklahoma, Dr. Sun joined the Department of Physiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science, where he serves as Department Chair. An accomplished researcher, lecturer, mentor, and scholar in the fields of molecular physiology and cardiovascular genomics, Dr. Sun has secured more than $10 million in funding from agencies including the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Robert and Mary Cade Foundation, and the Department of Defense. He has written or co-written more than 90 scholarly articles, and serves on multiple national journal editorial boards. Nationally, he also serves as a leader in the American Heart Association, the Academy of Cardiovascular Research Excellence, the American Physiological Society, and the NIH in peer study sections.
